If you are one of the many veterans with urinary incontinence you may be surprised to learn that studies indicate there may be a close relationship between post-traumatic stress and urinary incontinence.

One recent study was published on Pub Med, which involved 968 women aged 38 to 46 years old were enrolled in a computer assisted telephone interview, in order to evaluate urinary, medical and mental health issues. The study revealed there may be an association between stress and urgency urinary incontinence and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The results of the study revealed that 191 participants (approximately 19 percent) reported urgency and mixed urinary incontinence symptoms and a little over 18 percent of the study group had symptoms of stress urinary incontinence. Post-traumatic stress disorder was associated with urgency/ mixed urinary incontinence, but stress urinary incontinence was NOT associated with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Veterans report symptoms of service related incontinence resulting from many different health conditions including: urethral strictures, psychiatric medication side effects, and other service and non-service related medical conditions. According to a social media board, incontinence support.org, many veterans with incontinence complain about the incontinence products issued by the VA, stating they are sub- standard in quality.
