National Adoption Month 2015

by Sophia Parker on November 13, 2015

Person, National Adoption Month 2015

November has been deemed National Adoption month which has been celebrated in the U.S. for the past 19 years. President Ronald Reagan announced the first National Adoption week as far back as 1984. Fannypants.com dedicates this article on bladder problems in children in honor of National Adoption Month 2015.

What Causes Overactive Bladder (OAB) in Children?

Many people may not be aware of the fact that overactive bladder problems in children can be exacerbated by stress. Children going through the adoption process may be particularly prone to experiencing worsening symptoms of OAB.

Children with OAB need to urinate more often than other kids of the same age due to spasms of the bladder muscles affecting the urethra (the tube that passes from the bladder to the outside of the body where urine passes through). Urethral muscles are intended to keep urine from flowing out of the body, but when bladder spasms occur, these urethral muscles are unable to adequately do their job.

Another urinary problem commonly occurring in children is called “pollakiuria,” or frequent daytime urination. These kids may have to urinate as often as every 5 to 10 minutes during the day and the cause is believed to be related to stress. The condition normally goes away on its own when the stress resides.

If you have recently adopted a child (or plan to adopt in the near future), be aware that the stress of settling into a new home can cause or worsen urinary incontinence in children. The key is to stay calm, reassure the child, seek medical attention right away and get educated. Knowledge is power. Instead of becoming frustrated or shaming a child for having accidents, providing love, patience and understanding could help the condition to actually go away on its own. NOTE; new parents should ALWAYS seek medical attention for a child who is incontinent before attempting to see if the condition goes away without treatment.
