Millennials And Urinary Incontinence

by Sophia Parker on December 11, 2015

Person, Millennials And Urinary Incontinence

According to Wikipedia; “Millennials (also known as the Millennial Generation or Generation Y) are the demographic cohort following Generation X.” There is not an exact range of dates to delineate the Millennial’s time span, but most experts agree that the early 1980’s to the early 2000’s pretty accurately represents the general stretch of time for individuals included in this generation. Today’s Millennials would include someone who is in their late twenties to early thirties; someone who normally would not be associated with having stress incontinence because of their age.

Huffington Post describes Millennials as a generation that is “stressed out but optimistic.” One very interesting fact about Millennial’s lifestyle is that this is a generation that never knew a time when digital technology was not available. Having instant access to a world of video games, movie listings, road navigation and everything else the internet offers, at their fingertips (via smart phones) has driven this generation to be called an instant gratification cohort.

Another fact that is not well known about this young generation of women is that studies have indicated that a fairly large percentage suffer from a condition called Stress Urinary Incontinence.

Urinary incontinence refers to any condition where there is an uncontrolled loss of urine. Stress incontinence occurs only during specific types of movement such as coughing, sneezing, running or heavy lifting.

Many people believe that incontinence is a bladder problem that only occurs in older women or after child birth, but clinical studies performed in the UK indicated that many young women who have never been pregnant (in the millennial generation) suffer from incontinence.

In fact, among 500 women who were interviewed in the UK, as many as 206 reported that they had experienced occasional symptoms of stress incontinence. The overall prevalence rate for 18-34-year-old Millennial’s in all countries included in the survey was 18%.
