Incontinence is a common problem for an estimated 13 million Americans, and it affects men and women of many ages. It can become more of a problem as you age, but it can be easily managed. There can be dozens of different causes of incontinence, and there are several treatments available and ways to control it and reduce its effects on your life. Below are a few ways to improve the symptoms of light incontinence, but this is not a substitute for medical advice and you should always discuss your unique circumstance with your medical doctor.
1. Try pelvic floor exercises
Pelvic floor exercises can be beneficial for women and men for managing incontinence. The pelvic floor muscles can be weakened as a result of childbearing, surgery, problems with the nerves that control urination, and being overweight. Kegel exercises are beneficial for strengthening the pelvic floor muscles, and these exercises can help stop leakage or at the very least they can reduce the frequency. If you haven’t tried these exercises you definitely should, and an added benefit is that the exercises can help you control the urge to urinate when you can’t reach a bathroom quickly enough.
2. Think about your diet
If you drink too much liquid your bladder fills up and accidents are more likely. However this does not apply to pure water. Try to avoid caffeine and alcohol intake, as both of these drugs can cause your body to produce more urine. Once you stop consuming alcohol and caffeine (if you haven’t already) you’ll find that it is much easier to manage light incontinence and you won’t be running to the bathroom all the time.
